Things to Do with Young Kids — Right on Your Doorstep in Aberdeen
Aberdeen might not be the first city that springs to mind for a family holiday, but it should be. Scotland's third-largest city is genuinely brilliant for young children. It offers free world-class museums, a spectacular sandy beach just minutes from the centre, beautifully renovated parks with play areas, and a compact, walkable city heart. This makes getting around with a pushchair or excited toddler surprisingly straightforward.
Whether you're visiting for a weekend break or passing through on a longer Scottish adventure, here's our guide to the very best family-friendly things to do in Aberdeen city centre. We’ve even included a suggested day itinerary to help you make the most of your visit.
1. Union Terrace Gardens — Aberdeen's Brilliant New City Park

If there's one place that will win over children immediately, it's Union Terrace Gardens. Nestled in a Victorian sunken valley right off Union Street, this £28 million refurbished park is now one of the finest city centre green spaces in Scotland. Best of all, it’s completely free to visit.
Young children will head straight for the new play area. It features a fantastic large slide and interactive musical squares. There’s also a lovely café for parents in need of a coffee, clean toilets, and wide accessible pathways. These are ideal for buggies. The towering granite buildings framing the gardens give the whole place a uniquely Aberdonian character that you simply won't find anywhere else in Scotland.
📍 Off Union Street, city centre · Open daily, all year · Free entry
Local Tip: The gardens make an ideal start or end to your day. On weekday mornings, they're wonderfully quiet. This is perfect for letting toddlers roam freely. Keep an eye on the Aberdeen Performing Arts calendar too. The gardens regularly host free family events and festivals throughout the year.
2. Aberdeen Science Centre — Where Curious Minds Come Alive

Hands down, one of the best things to do with young children in Aberdeen is the Aberdeen Science Centre. It is an absolute joy. Following a remarkable £6 million transformation, it now houses over 60 fully interactive exhibits spread across multiple levels. Children simply don't want to leave.
For younger children aged 3 to 5, there are dedicated mini-scientist workshops. Here, learning happens entirely through play. Older children can interact with a high-tech robot, build and experiment at construction stations, and watch live science demonstrations. There’s also a soft play area for the very youngest visitors. This means families with children of different ages are well catered for. The on-site café is excellent too, handy for a mid-morning refuel.
Budget a good two to three hours here. Many families find they could happily spend a full day—and plenty do.

3. Aberdeen Maritime Museum — Pirates, Ships & the High Seas

For young imaginations, the Aberdeen Maritime Museum is pure gold. Tucked into the historic Shiprow near Aberdeen Harbour, this free museum brings Scotland's fascinating seafaring history to life. It does so in ways that genuinely capture children's attention.
The dedicated children's area features interactive exhibits. Kids can try on pirate costumes, learn about the daring exploits of North Sea sailors, and engage with hands-on displays. There are quiz sheets available for younger children, guided by the museum's own character, Granite Jack. This is a brilliant way to keep curious minds engaged as you move through the galleries.
The museum also covers Aberdeen's vital oil and gas heritage. This gives older children a fascinating glimpse into why this city became one of Europe's most important energy centres. It’s a story that continues to shape the place to this day.

4. Aberdeen Beach — A Stunning Sandy Sweep Minutes from the Centre

One of Aberdeen's best-kept secrets for visitors is the beach. Just a short bus ride or drive from the city centre—or a 30-minute walk—Aberdeen Beach is a sweeping two-mile stretch of golden sand. On a clear day, it’s genuinely breathtaking and a world away from what most people expect of a major Scottish city.
Young children will want to build sandcastles, splash in the shallows, and run the full length of the promenade. The beach is flanked by a variety of cafés and food outlets for a proper seaside lunch. If the weather turns (this is Scotland, after all!), the Beach Leisure Centre is immediately adjacent. Codona's Amusement Park offers gentle rides for toddlers, ten-pin bowling, and a family arcade.
📍 Beach Boulevard, approx. 1.5 miles from city centre · Free to visit
Local Tip: At the southern end of the beach, make time for a wander around Footdee—known locally as "Fittie." This charming historic fishing village has quirky, colourful cottages right where the harbour meets the sea. Children love exploring its narrow lanes, and it makes for a wonderful little adventure to end the day.
5. Provost Skene's House & Aberdeen Art Gallery — Culture in the Heart of the City

Opened following a major refurbishment, Provost Skene's House is one of Aberdeen's oldest surviving buildings. It is also one of its most engaging newer attractions. The exhibition celebrates the pioneering people of Aberdeen and the North-East—inventors, scientists, writers, athletes—presented in a way that's accessible and interesting for older primary-age children.
It pairs perfectly with the nearby Aberdeen Art Gallery. This gallery houses an impressive collection and has itself been extensively refurbished in recent years. Together, they make for a rewarding cultural hour or two in the very heart of the city. Best of all, both are completely free.
📍 Provost Skene's House: Guestrow, city centre · Aberdeen Art Gallery: Schoolhill · Both free
Bonus: The Nuart Street Art Trail — a Free Family Treasure Hunt

Aberdeen has an unexpected secret: one of Scotland's best collections of large-scale street art. The Nuart Aberdeen project and Painted Doors trail have transformed the city's walls and buildings into a remarkable open-air gallery. Turning it into a family treasure hunt is one of the most engaging free activities you can do in the city centre.
Download the trail map before you visit. Challenge the children to find as many murals and hidden details as possible. It gets families into corners of the city they’d otherwise never explore. The artwork itself is genuinely world-class—several pieces are by internationally celebrated artists.
